Our History

We are almost 200 years old!  Mt. Pleasant U.M.C.’s history goes all the way back to the mid-1830’s, when class meetings were held at Union School. One of the early class leaders built a church known as Boogher’s Chapel; the church still retains a Bible with that inscription. In 1870, the present sanctuary, at Crum and Liberty Roads, was built, as a Methodist-Episcopal church. It was part of a larger circuit known as the Liberty Circuit, which included New Market, Liberty, Mt. Pleasant, Israel’s Creek, Johnsville, Fountain, Woodsboro, Mt. Zion and Linganore Churches. We are currently a member of the Walkersville Cooperative Parish comprised of Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Zion and Walkersville United Methodist Churches.  In  1964, an addition was built onto the church to accommodate a fellowship hall and Sunday school classrooms and pastor’s  office. In 1989, the sanctuary was remodeled (at which time Alpha & Omega symbols were discovered stenciled around the ceiling area), and improvements have been made ever since, including a handicap ramp, a new sound system and HVAC  system, and improved signage and landscaping, as well as a refurbished roof.

From The Pastor

Thank you for taking a few moments to read about Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Whenever I describe our congregation, I find myself using words like ‘community’ and ‘family.” We are a vibrant group who enjoy each other’s  company and are committed to following Jesus; we worship with vigor and joy. That means we encourage prayer in church and throughout life. That means we love people outside the church through generosity, invitation, and compassion and relationship. Our hope is that all people will feel loved and welcomed at Mt. Pleasant. We want that for you. Come as you  are. Check us out, but more importantly, seek the truth of God that can only be known when one knows Jesus. You can read about us here or visit our website, but to fully know us, please come to a worship service or to a small group and feel the up- close, in-person fellowship that comes when people share time together with the Holy Spirit present.  We would love to meet you and get to know you and your family.

Activities and Events

Throughout the year Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church engages in activities and experiences that provide spiritual support and a lifetime of memories.  Part of being The Church is that we are active in community and social events, outreach programs and ministry.  Here are some of the events we do:

  • Sunday Worship at 9:15 am
  • Fellowship time after the service
  • Choir Rehearsal (Wed. 7:30 pm)
  • Bible Study (Thursday, 7:30 pm)
  • Mission trips
  • Parades and carnivals
  • Pancake breakfasts
  • Social events (such as day trips to Sight and Sound Theatre)
  • Regular outreach to community
  • Special services during the year (such as Ash Wednesday, Easter Sunrise, Christmas Eve)

Statement of Purpose

The Methodist church is a type of Christianity that was founded by John Wesley, started as a bible study from the Church of England.  The United Methodist Church affirms that God’s grace is sufficient for our lives.  Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  We believe each person is a gift from God with sacred value.  We work to assist each other in discovering and growing our spiritual walk.  At Mt. Pleasant UMC, we enjoy doing that!

We are handicap accessable and latex-free.
